The Centre Pompidou is the radical "inside-out" landmark designed by Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers and Gianfranco Franchini, with its structural beams, pipes and escalators pulled onto the exterior and colour-coded. Opened in 1977 in the Beaubourg quarter, it houses the Musee National d'Art Moderne, Europe's largest collection of modern and contemporary art, with works by Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky, Duchamp and Brancusi, alongside the Bpi public library and the IRCAM music-research institute. The building closed on 22 September 2025 for a five-year renovation and is due to reopen in 2030; in the meantime its "Constellation" programme spreads exhibitions across the Grand Palais, the new Maison Pompidou, Centre Pompidou-Metz and partner venues worldwide.
