iThe Shed · Hudson Yards
A survey of Virgil Abloh's work in fashion, art, architecture and music: nearly 1,000 objects from his archive over 28,000 sq ft, including a recreation of his Paris office.
Preview: written before the show opened
Somewhere in the 28,000 square feet is Virgil Abloh's Paris office, rebuilt: the studio at Pont Neuf where he worked. Nearby, a media lab opens a selection of his raw design files to anyone who walks in, which is the point The Shed makes about him: the process was meant to be shared.
Around those two rooms are nearly 1,000 objects picked from an archive of more than 20,000, across fashion, sneakers, art, architecture, graphic design and music. You see finished pieces next to the prototypes and sketches behind them. Earlier editions ran in Miami and at the Grand Palais in Paris, and this one opens around the fifth anniversary of his death.
Tickets are timed, from $25, and the last slot of the day gets you in an hour before closing. Students and educators go free with ID and a reservation. An $85 VIP ticket drops the time slot and adds a merch item sold only with it.
A recreation of Virgil Abloh's Paris office sits among nearly 1,000 objects from his archive, spread over 28,000 square feet. The scale suits a designer who ran Off-White and Louis Vuitton menswear at the same time.
