Founded by Larry Gagosian in 1980, Gagosian is one of the world's most powerful contemporary art galleries, with nearly twenty spaces worldwide and a cluster of them in New York. Its cathedral-like Chelsea galleries on West 24th and 21st Streets and its Upper East Side rooms on Madison Avenue mount museum-quality shows by artists ranging from Picasso, Warhol and Cy Twombly to Richard Serra and Jeff Koons. Admission is free, making it one of the city's great no-cost art destinations.
