Palazzo CitterioBrera
Digital performances by Marina Abramović, carried out by her avatar, on Palazzo Citterio's LED wall, presented by the Museo nazionale dell'Arte digitale.
Preview: written before the show opened
Marina Abramović has spent more than fifty years making the presence of her body the point of her work. On Palazzo Citterio's LED wall the performer is her avatar, a digital twin that carries out the gestures in her place. For an artist known for being in the room, her body is the one thing that isn't.
The project, Marina Abramović Element, began with ART, a series on the symbols that run through her work. Milan gets the next chapter, METHOD, built on the Abramović Method that underpins the Marina Abramović Institute. You stand in front of a screen rather than a person, and that is the premise: in 2025 Abramović called the avatar "a tool" that "is not replacing anything", and said it would realise "impossible performances" her own body couldn't.
Come for the idea rather than for Abramović in person. Entry is free, at the LED wall at Via Brera 12, Tuesday to Sunday 8:30 to 19:15 (last entry 18:00).
