Opened in 1913 inside the Teatro alla Scala, the Museo Teatrale grew from a private collection bought at auction in 1911 and traces the history of opera and theatre. Rooms hold Commedia dell'Arte prints and porcelain, portraits of Belcanto stars, Canova's bust of the tenor Nicola Tacchinardi, Verdi memorabilia including an autograph "Va, pensiero", period instruments and Franz Liszt's Steinway. When rehearsals allow, visitors can look into the auditorium from a box, and the Biblioteca Livia Simoni hosts temporary exhibitions.
