Opened in 2011 by Intesa Sanpaolo, the Gallerie d'Italia occupy three historic palazzi on Piazza della Scala, including Palazzo Brentani, Palazzo Anguissola and the former Banca Commerciale Italiana headquarters. The 19th-century route "Da Canova a Boccioni" runs from Canova's plaster reliefs through Hayez and Lombard Romanticism to Boccioni's early Futurism, while "Cantiere del '900" shows Fontana, Burri, Manzoni and other postwar artists. The old bank vault now holds some 500 paintings, and the museum stages major temporary exhibitions year-round.
