A meditative show on silence as ritual in Indonesia, from Bali's Nyepi New Year and Javanese Tapa Bisu to daily offerings and prayer, with Museu das Convergências.
On Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, the whole island stops for a day of absolute silence. In Java, Tapa Bisu is a walk made without a word. This show builds its picture of Indonesia, more than 17,000 islands and hundreds of ethnic groups, around practices like these, where silence keeps people, nature and the gods in balance.
It is on the ground floor. Pieces from the Fundação Oriente collection that rarely go on display sit alongside two loans from the Museu das Convergências, a Porto museum touring while its building is finished. It also takes in Subak, Bali's irrigation system where farming, religion and community organisation are one thing, plus Ramadan, Muslim prayer and the daily offerings left on altars.
You can go round with the curators, Rui Oliveira Lopes and Sofia Campos Lopes, on 30 October, 20 November or 11 December. One €10 ticket covers every exhibition in the building, entry is free on Fridays from 18:00 to 20:00, and it closes on 13 December.
