Founded in 1884, Portugal's National Museum of Ancient Art occupies the 17th-century Alvor-Pombal Palace on Rua das Janelas Verdes, overlooking the Tagus. Its collection of some 40,000 works spans Portuguese and European painting, sculpture, gold and silverware, furniture, ceramics, textiles and art from the Portuguese Discoveries.
