Opened by Fundação Oriente in 2008 inside the Pedro Álvares Cabral building, a former cod cold-storage warehouse on the Alcântara waterfront, the Museu do Oriente explores the ties between Portugal and Asia. The permanent Portuguese Presence in Asia galleries show Namban screens, Indo-Portuguese ivories and one of the country's most important collections of Chinese export porcelain. The Kwok On Collection of more than 15,000 objects covers Asian performing arts, from masks and puppets to theatre costumes, alongside a busy programme of temporary exhibitions.
