The Gulbenkian Foundation's Modern Art Centre, opened in 1983, holds one of the most important collections of Portuguese modern and contemporary art, from Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and Almada Negreiros to Paula Rego. After a renovation led by Kengo Kuma and Associates it reopened in September 2024, with a long engawa-style canopy linking the galleries to the extended garden. Rotating collection displays share the building with temporary exhibitions, a drawing room, a project space and a visitable open storage.
