This exhibition has ended.
Artist and designer Linde Burkhardt (b. 1937): paintings, carpets, ceramics and her metal-and-ceramic objects for Alessi. Most works then pass to the museum as a gift.
Museum websiteAlberto Alessi told Linde Burkhardt to try joining ceramics and steel, so she went through the company's stockroom. A plain cutlery cup became the steel base for her In Due vases, topped with hand-formed, ornamented ceramic. The title is her own line: she trained as a painter and calls herself an artist.
You walk into a show called "I am not a ceramist" and find mostly ceramics, in vitrines and on plinths: human-height stelae stacked like totems, a family of monumental vases, and the Schutzgöttinnen (protective goddesses) in ceramic, alabaster and wood. A wall projection covers the rest: carpets, glass, jewellery and public-space installations. Her reason for giving the museum most of it: at home, she says, you don't display pieces like these, you pack them up and put them in the Keller.
It closes on 18 October. Admission is €9 (€6 reduced, under-18s free), and the museum recommends booking online.
The In Due vases for Alessi
Look for hand-formed, ornamented ceramic sitting on a steel base that started life as a plain Alessi cutlery cup.
The ceramic stelae
Human-height columns built from several ceramic modules stacked on top of each other like totems.
The Schutzgöttinnen
Burkhardt's series of protective goddesses, made from ceramic, alabaster and wood.
The wall projection
Documentation of the work that isn't on the plinths: her carpets, glass objects, jewellery and installations in public space.
You want her paintings or carpets: almost everything on show is ceramic, the rest only projected.
Under-18s get in free.
