Asunción Bastida

Christian Dior once authorised one Barcelona couturier to reproduce some of his designs and sign them herself. That was Asunción Bastida, who started out in 1925, became the only woman in the top circle of Spanish haute couture, and was then overshadowed by men of her generation such as Manuel Pertegaz. Bonart calls this her first retrospective.

She ran a boutique on Passeig de Gràcia, showed at the 1929 International Exposition and, after the Civil War, had a presence in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, with collections shown in Brussels, Venice, Cairo and New York. She put cotton into evening dresses and borrowed embroidery from Catalan modernisme. The show gathers garments, period photographs, original sketches, magazines, advertising and audiovisual archives.
