Founded in 1864 as the Colonial Museum and known for decades as the Tropenmuseum, Wereldmuseum Amsterdam is one of the country's largest ethnographic collections, spanning Southeast Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East. Its permanent exhibitions confront the Netherlands' colonial past directly alongside displays of personal, everyday objects from around the world. Housed in a grand 19th-century building near Oosterpark, it also runs an active programme of contemporary temporary shows on art, identity and global culture.
