The National Maritime Museum occupies 's Lands Zeemagazijn, the vast 1656 naval storehouse designed by Daniel Stalpaert on Amsterdam's Eastern Islands. Its galleries hold one of the world's richest maritime collections: Golden Age sea paintings, Blaeu atlases and nautical charts, navigation instruments, the gilded Royal Barge and ornate ship decorations. Outside, a sailable replica of the 18th-century East Indiaman Amsterdam and the 1900 steamship Christiaan Brunings are moored alongside. Recent displays confront the colonial and slave-trading side of that seafaring history head-on.
