Hailun Ma - Hometown

Someone in a white dress and red boxing gloves sits on a patterned carpet beside a punching bag. That's Uruklyn, 2024. The series name splices Ürümqi, Ma's home city, with Brooklyn, where she studied. The Brooklyn half was borrowed from Breukelen, a short train ride from Amsterdam, so the name has come home twice.

This is Ma's first major solo show outside China. It gathers her recent series on Xinjiang, including Xinjiang Fashion Guide, Streetculture, Family and Urban Arts, plus a selection of covers she shot for international fashion magazines. You go from four young men lounging on a rooftop with a football and a bike to a figure in a helmet beside a motorcycle draped in red fabric. Foam calls the pictures bright and playful, sometimes staged, sometimes spontaneous.

Ma photographs people she knows rather than the region's postcard views. Entry is the €16 museum ticket, free with a Museumkaart and for under-12s, and Foam stays open until 21:00 on Thursdays and Fridays.
