Four woven tapestries by Malaysian textile artist Marcos Kueh in the Red Bedroom, a last love letter to his father that echoes the canopy of the empty four-poster bed.

More in Amsterdam

Behind four woven tapestries in the Red Bedroom, Marcos Kueh has repeated the words "I love you" over and over. They are for his father, words Kueh finds hard to say while his father is alive, so the museum calls the work a last love letter.

You walk into a 17th-century bedroom where the four-poster bed stands empty under its fabric canopy, and Kueh's weavings answer that canopy. Kueh, born in Sarawak on Borneo in 1995, came to weaving from graphic design and advertising. Here he also points you at the room's Imari vases, objects that may have meant something quite different where they came from, and at how familiar things can feel both recognisable and strange in a museum.

It's four works in one room of the house. Admission is €17.50 (€9.75 for ages 6 to 18, free with a Museumkaart), card only on site. Kueh gives an artist talk in English on Saturday 12 December, 15:00 to 17:00, €5 extra.

Look for

  • The empty four-poster bed

Look at its fabric canopy first: Kueh's four tapestries are made to mirror it, textile answering textile across the Red Bedroom.

  • The words behind the weave

On the back of the tapestries Kueh repeats "I love you" endlessly, the message to his father he struggles to say aloud.

  • The Imari vases

Part of the bedroom's historic furnishings, they are the objects Kueh asks you to see as they might have been valued in their original home.

Good for

  • An Hour Or Less
  • Locals Who've Seen It All
