Founded in 1869 by the bequest of Count Giovanni Querini Stampalia, the last of his line, the Foundation occupies the family's 16th-century palazzo beside Campo Santa Maria Formosa. Its house museum keeps period rooms and paintings by Giovanni Bellini, Pietro Longhi and Gabriel Bella, while the ground floor and garden were famously redesigned by Carlo Scarpa (1959-63), with later interventions by Valeriano Pastor and Mario Botta. A historic public library and a busy programme of contemporary art exhibitions complete the visit.
