Commemorative exhibition marking the 50th edition of Japan's prestigious Kimura Ihei Photography Award; full details to be announced by the museum closer to opening.
Preview: written before the show opened
The first Kimura Ihei Award went to Kitai Kazuo, and the fiftieth went this year to Hamamoto Kanata. Between them are 62 winners, and this show gathers their work in the basement gallery. Asahi Shimbun set up the prize in 1975 for photographers early in their careers, in any genre, so Shiga Rieko, Hatakeyama Naoya and Ninagawa Mika all hang here.
You move through the half-century by approach rather than by year: documentary, snapshot, portrait, nature, private photography and gender, then photography as contemporary art. The museum warns that a few winners won't be shown and some may show different work from the series that won.
Tickets are ¥1,200, ¥1,000 for students and over-65s. From 5 November, students get in free on Thursday and Friday evenings, 17:00 to 20:00. On 19 November at 18:30, Shiga, Hatakeyama, Nitta Itsuki and Obara Masafumi discuss what winning changed: free, 190 seats, numbered tickets on the day.
Junior-high age and under get in free.
