iTokyo Photographic Art MuseumEbisu Garden Place, Meguro
Five contemporary artists using AI, CG and stop-motion reassemble existing memories, materials and technologies into new imagery, questioning how we perceive information today.
On the third floor, a metal blade shaves a block of wood one thin layer at a time while Hashimoto Baku photographs each new cross-section. He is shooting the film in the gallery over the show's three and a half months, and expects to finish with about three minutes of it.
The other four artists also build new pictures out of things that already existed. You pass blackboards silkscreened with fragments of school buildings by Ichida Sayuri, shown in Japan for the first time. Nomura Zai burns collected portrait photographs and prints the long-exposure flame light onto glass. Karibe Taro scrambles a TV signal into noise and lets AI landscape recognition decide what it shows, and Fujikura Asako builds a fictional city from live footage, 3D CG and AI.
Tickets are ¥700, and junior-high age and under go free. Thursdays and Fridays run to 20:00, and from 5 to 27 November students get in free after 17:00 on those evenings. Five Sunday artist talks are free with a ticket.
Hashimoto Baku's Milling Stop-Motion
Look for the two-channel film of metal blades shaving a wooden block, its cross-section changing frame by frame, still being shot in the gallery during the run.
Nomura Zai's How Brightly Biophotons Shine
Found portrait photographs set alight, their flames caught in long exposures and printed with UV ink on glass panes held in stainless steel hardware.
Ichida Sayuri's Kūseki (Vacant Seats)
Blackboards silkscreened with fragments of school buildings, about the time that piles up in classrooms, shown in London before its first Japanese outing here.
Karibe Taro's Aim an Arrow at the Rock in the Ocean
Inkjet prints made by disrupting a TV signal into glitch noise, then feeding it to AI landscape recognition to see what the machine reads into it.
Fujikura Asako's 4 Tales of Open Sunrise City
A two-channel installation mixing live footage, 3D CG and AI into an invented city run on infrastructure and logistics.
You want photographs on a wall: much of the room is video, CG and installation.
Junior-high age and under get in free.
