Women behind the camera: rewriting Swedish photography history with long-overlooked work by female professional photographers.
Preview: written before the show opened
Ida Eklund's photographs and glass negatives were hidden under the floorboards of her studio, and Alma Haag's collection survived in a relative's suitcase. Much of this show was saved like that: 24 Swedish women who worked as professional photographers between 1848 and 1968, in close to 300 pictures, many never shown before.
It comes from the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg and follows the 2024 book of the same name: a timeline from the studio boom of the 1860s to the decline after 1920, between biographies and sections on self-portraits, press work, fashion and advertising. You read your way round. In Gothenburg the pictures hung close at eye level, with the book open in places. Karin Frid, reviewing that showing in Göteborgs-Posten, called it a much-needed history lesson that doesn't shout "women can" but names a fault in how photography's history was written.
Fotografiska promises a new format and opens it on 5 December. Entry is included in the 195 SEK ticket, and it is open until 23:00 daily.
