Martin Venezky: Process Work

Now showing26 September 2026 – 8 November 2026·$10

Reading Room pop-up of 50+ images by designer Martin Venezky, 1990 to now: taped collage assemblages and photographic experiments behind his ornate typographic work.

Each of Martin Venezky's paper assemblages is held together with ordinary clear tape, and some took him days or weeks. Jon Sueda, his first assistant and now the Archive's curator, calls them 2½D: flat enough to scan, deep enough that you need to see them in person. Venezky scanned them and added colour on screen; this room shows the stage before that.

It's the eighth Reading Room pop-up: over 50 images from 1990 to now, including photographic experiments Venezky recently gave from his own collection, shown here for the first time. You walk in and stand among the working materials behind his ornate type, which he says were never meant as works on their own. He hates the word brainstorming ("usually the loud, clever ones") and would rather "material-storm".

It's one room on Floor 4R, alongside the Main Gallery's Type for All!, and free to all on Thursdays, open until 8pm. On Thursday 22 October at 6pm, Venezky talks about his process at a ticketed salon ($15).

  • The taped paper assemblages

Look for layered, tangled paper collages held together with plain clear tape, which Sueda calls 2½D for their sculptural depth.

  • The donated photographic experiments

Look for Venezky's photographs of type and objects under light, part of a gift from his own collection shown here for the first time.

Good for

  • Cheap Culture
  • Evening Visits
  • Locals Who've Seen It All
