Vox Populi is a non-profit artist collective founded in 1988, when some thirty Philadelphia artists met over beers at the dive bar Dirty Franks and decided to make their own opportunities. It has run ever since on a non-hierarchical model in which member artists programme the space themselves, and it is now the longest continuously operating artist collective in the city. The third-floor galleries at 319 North 11th Street turn over roughly every six weeks with solo and group shows by members and guest artists, alongside guest-curated projects and exchanges with peer spaces. AUX, Vox's 1,000-square-foot black box opened in 2011, adds performance, sound and moving-image work to the mix; admission to everything is free.
