Founded in 1977 by Marion Boulton "Kippy" Stroud, The Fabric Workshop and Museum is a contemporary art institution built around an Artist-in-Residence Program rather than a fixed display. Artists arrive with an idea and work alongside FWM's studio staff — screenprinters, sewers, technicians — to push textiles and new media into forms they could not produce alone. The resulting works have built a permanent collection of more than 5,500 objects by over 400 artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Ann Hamilton, Anish Kapoor, Glenn Ligon and Carrie Mae Weems. Its Arch Street galleries, a short walk from the Convention Center, rotate through ambitious exhibitions drawn from residencies and the collection.
