Bavarian State Archaeological Collection

Founded in 1885 as the Prähistorische Sammlung, the Archäologische Staatssammlung München reopened in April 2024 after an eight-year, €66 million renovation that added a 600 m² underground special-exhibition hall by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos. Its landmark 1970s Corten-steel building on the edge of the Englischer Garten now holds more than 15,000 objects from Bavarian prehistory, the Roman era and the Early Middle Ages. The permanent exhibition spans two floors, pairing archaeological method with themes of daily life, belief and power across the millennia.
