Milan's civic gallery of modern art has occupied the Villa Reale (Villa Belgiojoso Bonaparte) since 1921, a neoclassical palace built 1790-96 by Leopoldo Pollack and later Napoleon's Milan residence. Its core is the 19th-century collection, from Canova and Hayez to the Scapigliati and the Divisionists, crowned by Pellizza da Volpedo's Il Quarto Stato. The Grassi and Vismara collections (Manet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani) normally hang on the second floor, and the villa's English garden faces the Giardini Indro Montanelli.
