Founded by INBAL in 1968, the Museo Nacional de San Carlos holds one of Latin America's most important collections of European painting, sculpture and prints from the 14th to the early 20th century, with works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Frans Hals, Anthony van Dyck, Ingres and Rodin. It occupies the late-18th-century Palacio del Conde de Buenavista, attributed to Manuel Tolsá, whose elliptical Patio Oval hosts sculpture and events. Six permanent galleries are complemented by four spaces for temporary exhibitions.
