This exhibition has ended.
Centenary show on Carlos Paredes (1925-2004), master of the Portuguese guitar, through his instruments, records, documents and films.
Museum websiteAmália Rodrigues called Carlos Paredes "the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos of the Portuguese guitar", and the monastery took her at her word: it is one of three places his will left his guitars to, with the Museu do Fado and the Museu de Lisboa. For his centenary, those guitars are shown together.
Around them are his complete discography, films, programmes from his concerts and from the plays he scored, and 1970s photographs by Carlos Gil, some never published. You also get the life behind the records: the son of guitarist Artur Paredes, jailed by the PIDE in the late 1950s, later recording with jazz bassist Charlie Haden. He kept an office job at Hospital de São José into the 1990s, so the guitar gathering dust on your wardrobe has run out of excuses.
The show was extended from January and now closes on 31 October. Entry is the €5 museum ticket (€2.50 for ages 13 to 25), sold at the desk or on BOL; closed Mondays.
