SMK (Statens Museum for Kunst) is the National Gallery of Denmark, rooted in the Danish kings' collections and housed since 1896 in Vilhelm Dahlerup's Italian Renaissance revival building, linked to a 1998 extension by a glazed Sculpture Street. Its displays span European masters (Mantegna, Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt), the Danish Golden Age and Hammershøi, French modernism by Matisse, Picasso and Derain, and Danish and international art after 1900. Between 2027 and 2029 the collection galleries close and reopen in stages for a major rehang, while the museum stays open with special exhibitions.
