Founded in 1870 and in its Guy Lowell–designed Huntington Avenue building since 1909, the MFA holds more than 450,000 objects spanning the ancient world to the present. Its Art of the Americas Wing, opened in 2010, threads four levels of painting, sculpture and decorative arts from pre-Columbian gold to Copley, Sargent and O'Keeffe. The Asian collection of over 115,000 objects includes the finest and largest holding of Japanese art anywhere outside Japan, while the Egyptian and Nubian galleries draw on the museum's own Giza excavations. Thursday and Friday evenings run late to 10 pm, and the third Thursday of each month is pay-what-you-wish from 5 pm.

The Huntington Avenue main entrance has ramps on either side of the stairs and power-assist doors; the Linde Family Wing entrance on Museum Road offers a level entrance for visitors who need one. Wheelchairs and gallery stools available to borrow free. Service dogs welcome. The State Street Corporation Fenway Entrance is currently closed.
