The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts is the only building in North America designed by Swiss-born architect Le Corbusier, who worked on it with Chilean architect Guillermo Jullian de la Fuente; it opened in 1963. An S-shaped concrete ramp lifts visitors off Quincy Street and carries them through the third floor, past studio windows — Le Corbusier's attempt at a "synthesis of the arts" made circulation. Today the Carpenter Center programmes contemporary art across its Level 1, Level 3 and Sert galleries, with commissions, publications, public events and residencies, all free and open to the public. It shares the building with Harvard's Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies and with the Harvard Film Archive.
