The Harvard Art Museums gather three distinct institutions under a single roof in Cambridge: the Fogg Museum, strongest in European and American art; the Busch-Reisinger Museum, devoted to the art of German-speaking Europe; and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, home to Asian, Mediterranean and Islamic collections. Renzo Piano's 2014 renovation wrapped the 1927 neo-Georgian building in a glass-roofed lantern that drops daylight down through six levels into the travertine-arched Calderwood Courtyard. The combined holdings run to roughly 250,000 objects, from Van Gogh's Self-Portrait Dedicated to Paul Gauguin and the Impressionists of the Wertheim bequest to ancient bronzes and Chinese jades. Study centres and glass-walled conservation labs sit alongside the public galleries, and admission has been free to every visitor since June 2023.
