Germany's first comprehensive survey of Swedish modernism: Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald, Nils Dardel and the Göteborg Colourists, on loan from Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
Preview: written before the show opened
In 1915 the Berlin gallery Der Sturm showed a group of Swedish painters as "Swedish Expressionists". Today the work of Sigrid Hjertén and Isaac Grünewald is known to only a few people in Germany, and this is the first comprehensive exhibition of Swedish modernism in the country.
The show follows three artist groups: De Unga (The Young), De åtta (The Eight) and the Göteborg Colourists, who shared the aim of breaking away from entrenched academic traditions. Fifteen artists are named, among them Nils Dardel, Einar Jolin and Henri Matisse. The works come from Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the show is the return leg of an exchange: the Brücke-Museum's own collection travelled to Stockholm in 2024. It's the museum-sized version of lending a friend your record collection and finally hearing theirs.
Entry is €6 (reduced €4; free for under-18s and students aged 18 to 27). Open Wednesday to Monday, 11:00 to 17:00, closed Tuesdays. Texts are in German and English.
Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald and Nils Dardel, lent by Moderna Museet, in Germany's first full survey of Swedish modernism. It echoes Der Sturm's 1915 "Swedish Expressionists" show, and the pavilion sits on the Grunewald's edge, so the forest walk comes free.
