Museu Tàpies

Founded by the painter Antoni Tàpies in 1984 and now known as the Museu Tàpies, it holds one of the most complete collections of his work, largely donated by Antoni and Teresa Tàpies. It opened in 1990 in the former Montaner y Simón publishing house (1880-82), an early Modernista building by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and the first in the Eixample to bring exposed brick and iron into the city centre. Tàpies crowned the facade with his tangled wire sculpture Núvol i cadira (Cloud and Chair). Alongside rotating shows of Tàpies's work, the museum stages contemporary art exhibitions and keeps a specialist art library on the publisher's original shelves.
