The show is named after a toe. In November 1929 Georges Bataille published "Le Gros Orteil" (The Big Toe) in Documents, the Paris avant-garde magazine he had founded that year with Michel Leiris, and made the body's least classical part a serious subject. The Fundació says the drawings here were most likely inspired by it.

You climb to the Archive, in the octagonal tower on the first floor, for one drawing: Untitled (1930), pencil on Ingres paper and the newest work in the collection. Françoise Marquet Zao donated it, and it once belonged to the painter Zao Wou-Ki. Beside it are the sketches Miró made for the whole series, so you can watch him try out forms and signs before the final composition.

This is a small archive show for people who already know Miró's paintings and want the thinking behind them. It comes with the general ticket (€18, €17 online) and runs until 7 February 2027.

Miró's newly donated drawing Untitled (1930) hangs with his sketches for the series, probably sparked by Georges Bataille's essay 'Le Gros Orteil': an essay about, of all things, the big toe.
