Atlantic Window IV: Sedrig Verwoert

Now showing9 October 2026 – 4 April 2027€20

Choreographer Sedrig Verwoert traces dance in the diaspora, pairing a travelogue of his research into Winti, Kawina and Tambu in Suriname and Curacao with the dance film Strange Fruit 2.0.

More in Amsterdam

The starting point is a children's song. Faya Siton is a well-known Surinamese song that refers to slavery and Suriname's colonial past, and choreographer Sedrig Verwoert, born in Suriname and raised in Amsterdam, built his dance film Strange Fruit 2.0 on it.

Beside the film is a travelogue of his research trip to Suriname and Curaçao, where he looked into Winti and Tambú, dance forms rooted in colonial oppression and slavery. The museum's point is that memory lives in bodies as well as archives. This is the fourth Atlantic Window, a series in which contemporary artists answer Shadows on the Atlantic, the museum's display on its colonial history, so you can walk from one to the other.

It is included in the €20 museum ticket (free with a Museumkaart), open daily 10:00 to 17:00. On Sunday 8 November at 14:00, Verwoert and his company dance Strange Fruit 2.0 and The Ritual live in the museum: free, one hour, registration required.
