Fifth edition: artists Marije Gertenbach and Shani Leseman take over working studios inside Rembrandt's house, with visitors able to watch them at work from 13 November to 10 January.
Preview: written before the show opened
Two painters are moving into the house where Rembrandt lived and worked for 19 years. Marije Gertenbach and Shani Leseman set up their studios inside the museum, and from 13 November they work there live while visitors watch.
This is the fifth edition. Gertenbach, born in 1990, makes paintings and prints that read as abstract, with large planes of colour in which the shape of a body can just be made out. She works on jute canvases. Leseman, born in 1996 in Curaçao, mixes earth pigments by hand and works on cotton and glass sheets, leaving room for chance. You can follow the process up close, see new work and talk to both artists. Two people painting in full view of strangers is more exposed than your open-plan desk on the Zuidas.
The show is included in museum admission (€23.50). Live work runs 13 November to 10 January. From 2 November to 18 December the museum closes at 17.00 instead of 18.00.
For the fifth edition, artists Marije Gertenbach and Shani Leseman take over working studios inside Rembrandt's house, and you can watch them at work: the rare studio where reading over someone's shoulder is the point.
Gertenbach's bodies in colour
Large planes of colour in which a body is just visible, on jute canvases, in paintings and prints.
Leseman's hand-mixed earth pigments
She mixes the pigments herself and paints on cotton and glass sheets, so you can see how material and chance shape the work.
