The playwright Carlo Goldoni was born in 1707 in Palazzo Centani, a Gothic palazzo in San Polo whose courtyard, with its well and open staircase, is among Venice's most photographed. Now one of the city's civic museums (MUVE), the house recreates scenes from his comedies with 18th-century furniture, Longhi paintings and the Grimani family's marionette theatre. It also holds a theatre studies library of some 30,000 works.
