Known as MOMAT, this was Japan's first national museum of art, opening in 1952 and moving in 1969 into its current Yoshiro Taniguchi-designed building in Kitanomaru Park. Its collection of over 13,000 works spans Japanese and international painting, prints, sculpture, photography and calligraphy from the Meiji era to the present, shown in rotating "MOMAT Collection" displays alongside special exhibitions. The museum sits beside the Imperial Palace moat, a short walk from Takebashi Station.
