More in San Francisco

A black telephone receiver and a man in a hat walking up to an old car, printed over lilac circles: that's Gvido Augusts's poster for Breathless. The Pacific Film Archive's Tom Luddy commissioned the set for Jean-Luc Godard's first visit to Berkeley, a retrospective of his films in March 1968.

You'll find them framed in a row on the Collection Wall outside the Film Library & Study Center, on the Lower Level. Luddy's favourite was La Chinoise, and he gave his own copy to Henri Langlois for the Cinémathèque française's museum in Paris. That poster still advertises the "first American showings"; the Archive's next one is November 19, a mere 58 years later.

It's one wall, so it's a short stop. Gallery admission is $18, free on the first Thursday of the month and for under-14s. A ticket to the Godard film series, running through November 19, includes gallery admission that day.

Look for

  • The Breathless poster

A black telephone receiver and a man in a hat walking up to a vintage car sit on overlapping lilac circles, with the title À bout de souffle up top.

  • The yellow double bill

Une femme est une femme and Vivre sa vie share one yellow sheet: a black silhouetted figure beside the two titles in mismatched lettering, and a red, white and blue stripe.

  • Band of Outsiders

Blue, yellow and green figures tangle across the sheet, a green fedora sits at the bottom, and Godard's name is split in two by the drawing.

  • La Chinoise, Luddy's favourite

A green-haired woman in blue stands before red PARIS 1967 lettering, under the words First American Showings and Napalm.

Good for
