Chartered in 1876 for the Centennial Exposition, the Philadelphia Museum of Art moved into its monumental Fairmount hill home in 1928, a dolomite temple by Horace Trumbauer and Zantzinger, Borie and Medary whose east steps became famous as the "Rocky steps". The collection runs to more than 240,000 objects spanning European, American and Asian art, sculpture, prints, photographs and arms and armor. Its strengths are unusual: the world's most important holding of Thomas Eakins, a landmark Marcel Duchamp collection, French Impressionist painting, and the second-largest arms and armor collection in the United States. The museum also administers the Rodin Museum and the nearby Perelman Building.
