The Barnes Foundation holds one of the greatest collections of impressionist, post-impressionist and early modern painting anywhere: 181 Renoirs, 69 Cezannes, 59 Matisses, 46 Picassos, plus Van Gogh, Modigliani and Soutine. Albert C. Barnes, who made his fortune from the antiseptic Argyrol, arranged every work himself into dense symmetrical "ensembles" that mix canvases with African masks, Native American textiles, Pennsylvania German furniture and wrought-iron hardware. Those wall arrangements are still hung exactly as he left them. The collection moved from Merion to this Tod Williams Billie Tsien building on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in 2012, which reproduces the original gallery rooms inside a light-filled contemporary shell.
