Founded in 1977 by curator Marcia Tucker, the New Museum is dedicated to "new art and new ideas," championing living artists before the mainstream catches on. Its iconic home, a stack of off-kilter white boxes designed by Japanese firm SANAA, opened on the Bowery in 2007 and was hailed as a landmark of contemporary architecture. In March 2026 the museum reopened with an OMA-designed expansion that doubled its gallery space, adding a sculptural atrium stair, a public plaza, and a seventh-floor Sky Room. As a non-collecting institution, it stages ambitious rotating exhibitions and the recurring New Museum Triennial of emerging artists.
