More in Madrid

Vermeer's View of Delft, painted around 1660, hangs in a space of its own at the end of this show. It is the centrepiece of 25 works the Mauritshuis in The Hague has sent to Madrid, while 25 from the Thyssen travel the other way in the first simultaneous swap between the two museums.

The show fills three of the Thyssen's classical rooms on level 2. The first holds still lifes and genre painting, the second landscapes and figure compositions, with Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Jacob van Ruisdael, Pieter de Hooch and Hendrick Avercamp among the names, dating from about 1615 to 1705. The Thyssen hangs its own pictures beside the loans where they answer each other, so you keep meeting the same church or the same fiddler twice.

Time Out called it "small but extraordinary". It is included in general admission, with no time slot: €14, or €10 reduced, and under-18s go free. Monday from 12:00 to 16:00 is free. On Saturdays it closes at 21:00.

Editor's pick

Vermeer's View of Delft hangs alone at the end of the route, one of 25 loans from The Hague. The Thyssen hangs its pictures beside them, so Honthorst's two violinists meet again. Time Out called it "small but extraordinary".

Look for

  • View of Delft, set apart

Look for Vermeer's townscape of about 1660 to 1661, given its own space at the end of the route, away from the other loans.

  • Two gardens side by side

Jan Brueghel the Elder's Garden of Eden from the Thyssen hangs with the Brueghel and Rubens Garden of Paradise from The Hague.

  • Two views of Saenredam's church

The Thyssen's West Façade of the Church of Saint Mary in Utrecht is shown next to the Mauritshuis's church exterior by the same painter.

  • Honthorst's two violinists

Gerard van Honthorst's Happy Violinist with a Glass of Wine, from the Thyssen, is reunited with its companion piece, The Violinist, from The Hague.
