Founded in 1919 by railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington and opened to the public in 1928, The Huntington combines a research library, an art museum, and roughly 130 acres of specialized botanical gardens. The library holds a vellum Gutenberg Bible, the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer, and letters by Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln, while the art collections range from 18th-century British portraiture to American painting and sculpture. The gardens include the Chinese Garden (Liu Fang Yuan), the Japanese Garden with its restored Shōya House, and a Desert Garden with one of the world's largest outdoor cactus collections.
