Perched above the 405 in Brentwood and reached by a driverless tram from the parking garage, the Getty Center is Richard Meier's 1997 hilltop campus of travertine pavilions, home to the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Research Institute and the wider Getty Trust. Its galleries hold European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the 1900s, a world-class photography collection and Van Gogh's Irises. Outside, Robert Irwin's ever-changing Central Garden, a cactus garden and sculpture terraces frame sweeping views from the Pacific to downtown. Admission is free with a timed-entry reservation; parking is paid.
