Preview: written before the show opened

Five new paintings answer three 17th-century pictures in the Getty's collection by Orazio Gentileschi and his daughter Artemisia. Hodges coats each canvas in opaque black and lets faceless figures emerge from the dark, and here he turns that method on biblical and mythological stories the Getty calls full of violence, drama and theatricality.

It's one of three Hodges shows opening on 20 October, his first solo museum shows in Southern California. CAAM in Exposition Park sets him beside Bassano's Miracle of the Quail, and Art + Practice in Leimert Park goes back to his Compton childhood, so you need three trips across the city for the whole project. He coached tennis and co-founded a reggae band before painting.

Expect five paintings, not a survey. It's in the Museum East Pavilion, Upper Level, free with a timed reservation released six weeks ahead (parking is paid), with labels in English and Spanish. Hodges talks with the curators at a free lecture on 27 October, and Saturdays run to 9pm.
