Founded in 1895, the Stedelijk holds roughly 90,000 objects of modern and contemporary art and design, from Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Matisse and Mondrian to Pollock, Warhol, De Kooning and Marlene Dumas. Its Malevich holdings are the largest outside Russia, and CoBrA, De Stijl and Bauhaus design run through the collection alongside a deep graphic-design and poster archive. Adriaan Weissman's 1895 neo-Renaissance building was joined in 2012 by Benthem Crouwel's seamless white composite wing, promptly nicknamed 'the bathtub'. The permanent STEDELIJK BASE display fills that wing with some 700 highlights, while large temporary shows fill the historic halls.
