iStedelijk Museum AmsterdamMuseumplein / Amsterdam-Zuid
Landmark retrospective spanning more than seven decades of Kusama's work — painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, fashion, collage and happenings.
Red-and-white dots appear on the Museumplein trees and the Stedelijk's facade before you reach a single work. Inside, more than 300 works span seven decades, starting with childhood drawings where the dots first show up.
The show fills a whole wing, running through net paintings, silver accumulation sculptures, the 1965 rowing boat of Aggregation: One Thousand Boats Show and late paintings hung in a grid. Two Infinity Mirror Rooms get roughly 25 seconds each, depending on the crowd. That is about one red light at Leidseplein, so look first and photograph second.
Tickets carry a fixed start time and sell out weeks ahead, with the last slot at 16:45. Adults pay €32.50 and under-18s are free. Flash, tripods and selfie sticks are banned.
