The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands, founded in 1798 and housed since 1885 in Pierre Cuypers' monumental red-brick building on Museumplein. Its collection of around one million objects spans 800 years of Dutch history and art, from medieval sculpture and Delftware to the Asian Pavilion's treasures. The Gallery of Honour leads to the Night Watch Gallery, built around Rembrandt's civic guard portrait, with Vermeer's Milkmaid and works by Frans Hals and Jan Steen alongside. A ten-year renovation completed in 2013 restored Cuypers' original decorative scheme and added a light-filled atrium entrance.
