Inauguré en 1910 en tant que tout premier édifice du Smithsonian conçu exclusivement pour abriter les collections nationales, ce monument de style Beaux-Arts situé sur le National Mall rassemble plus de 148 millions de spécimens et d’objets d’art répartis dans sept départements de recherche. Dans la rotonde coiffée d'une coupole, les visiteurs saluent d'abord Henry, un éléphant de savane d’Afrique naturalisé, avant de découvrir le célèbre diamant Hope, un tyrannosaure figé en plein combat contre un triceratops, une baleine franche de près de 14 mètres de long et 274 mammifères naturalisés. Dans les coulisses des galeries, plusieurs centaines de scientifiques étudient des domaines allant des météorites aux origines de l'humanité. L’entrée est gratuite et sans réservation.
